On April 25-27, the Academy joined the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) and other community partners in presenting the Fourth Annual National Urban Health Conference. The Academy hosted the conference’s opening session on Building Healthy Communities, which brought together leaders of a range of community-based organizations, local business, and government agencies.

SOCAP Health: Creating the Market that Values Health
In June, the Academy partnered with Social Capital Markets (SOCAP), the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and the Build Healthy Places Network to present the SOCAP Health conference, “Creating the Market that Values Health,” with the goal of examining the roles of entrepreneurs, investors, and funding bodies in the larger public health ecosystem. The 2-day conference featured a cross-sector discussions and presentations about what creates health in our society, and where new market opportunities exist, looking at the intersection of health systems, social systems, venture capital investment and solutions that generate well-being in communities. Over 250 participants attended, representing finance, community development, healthcare, philanthropy, and entrepreneurs.

Population Health Summit
In October, The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth), in partnership with the Academy and New York University School of Medicine, Department of Population Health, convened its second Population Health Summit, Bridging Health Care and Population Health – Payment and Financing Models, at the Academy. The meeting brought together state and national leaders to explore how changes in New York State’s health care payment systems and other financing mechanisms might best support efforts to improve population health, i.e., the health of entire communities.

Commissioner’s Medical Grand Rounds

The Academy was pleased to host two sessions in a new Grand Rounds series launched by then-New York State Acting Commissioner of Health Howard A. Zucker, MD, JD, with the goal of providing critical continuing medical education opportunities to physicians. The Grand Rounds, on the topics of “Prescription Drug Abuse & Pain Management” in October and “Ebola, Past and Present” in December, were co-presented with the New York State Department of Health and several academic and medical partners.
